Speaking our truth when it’s needed can be tough. Someone’s feelings can get hurt. We may fear consequences. Vulnerability strikes us. To say what is true for us takes great courage. Of course, many things are better left unsaid. But when it’s something that bothers us, or we witness an injustice or someone is hurting him or herself, we need to be honest about how we feel for the sake of ourselves and others.
Try this: Do you have something that you need to say to someone? Make a plan to speak up about it and give some thought to how you will approach the subject. The important thing is to know that you may be nervous or even scared and that’s okay. You’ll want to, of course, speak in a kind, respectful and calm way, not from any strong emotion. This will help keep the person listening to you. If it doesn’t go well for some reason, know that you maintained your integrity and honored yourself by speaking your truth.
