“Imagination is the source of every form of human achievement. And it’s the one thing that I believe we are systematically jeopardizing in the way we educate our children and ourselves.” ~Sir Ken Robinson
In this inspiring and funny TED talk, Sir Ken Robinson, an internationally recognized leader in the development of education, creativity and innovation, makes a strong case for creating an educational system that nurtures creative talents rather than squanders them. His belief is that creativity is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status. He says that “many highly talented, brilliant creative people think they are not because the thing that they were good at in school was not valued and was actually stigmatized”. He tells a great story about Gillian Lynne, pioneering choreographer of the Broadway plays CATS and the Phantom of the Opera, that brilliantly illustrates his point that we must value creativity and educate the “whole being” to prepare our children for the future.
Can you think of a time, as a child or an adult, where your creativity was crushed or underappreciated? If so, we’d love to hear about it. Or, simply give us your opinion on Sir Ken Robinson’s talk.
