Welcome to Virtues for Life, a website designed to inspire and coach you in the daily practice of virtues so that you can achieve your personal best and, consequently, lead a more extraordinary life. We can learn from people who have practiced a virtue to overcome incredible odds, fear and self-doubt and go on to achieve great personal success. Their inspiring stories and yours are the foundation for this website. Our intention, with your help, is to create a global consciousness in the difference the practice of virtues can make in everyday life.
Message from the Founder
I became interested in virtues over 20 years ago when I first heard about Dr. Benjamin Carson, now a world-renowned neurosurgeon. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he came from a single parent home, lived in dire poverty, had a bad temper, low self-esteem, and struggled with poor grades. His childhood dream was to become a doctor and his circumstances seemed insurmountable in achieving that goal. But he recognized at a very young age the importance of working hard, doing his best always, and making the right choices in life.
For nearly a quarter of a century, Dr. Carson has been the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, MD. He has had an amazing career to include the first successful operation of twins joined at the back of the head, and receiving the 2008 Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor, for his “skills as a surgeon, high moral standards, and dedication to helping others.”
A Man of Excellence
Dr. Carson overcame many obstacles and practiced countless virtues to obtain his extraordinary success, but if I were to pick a single virtue that I would say his life emulates, it would be excellence. He always did his best no matter what the endeavor. He learned about striving for excellence from his mother who consistently encouraged and challenged him to better himself through education and hard work.
I was so inspired with Dr. Carson’s life story of triumph over adversity and so many other people who practiced a virtue or virtues to achieve great things that I decided to create a website to tell these remarkable stories.
